The Margaret River community is mourning the loss of Lauren Scanlon, a highly respected environmental educator whose unwavering dedication to conservation, community engagement, and environmental education touched thousands of lives. For many years, Lauren was one of the most recognizable faces of Nature Conservation Margaret River Region. Through her work, she inspired people of all ages to develop a deeper appreciation for the natural environment. Whether she was guiding schoolchildren through local bushland, restoring the Wooditjup Bilya, protecting the threatened western ringtail possum, or working alongside volunteers to plant native vegetation, Lauren’s enthusiasm and love for nature were evident in everything she did.
As the driving force behind the organization’s Our Patch environmental education program, Lauren introduced thousands of Year 3 and Year 6 students to the wonders of the region’s unique landscapes. Her engaging, hands-on approach encouraged curiosity, respect for the environment, and a lifelong commitment to conservation. She believed every child could become a steward of the natural world, and her passion inspired generations of young learners.
Lauren also played a leading role in the Friends of Wooditjup Bilya stewardship program, bringing together volunteers who dedicated countless hours to restoring and caring for the Margaret River. Her leadership fostered a strong sense of community, proving that meaningful environmental change begins when people work together with a shared purpose.
In addition to coordinating the western ringtail possum conservation program, Lauren recently helped organize the inaugural Together With Nature tree-planting festival, an event that united hundreds of community members in restoring the river foreshore. Even in her final months, she remained committed to creating opportunities for people to connect with and care for the environment.
Lauren’s academic achievements—including an Honours degree in Environmental Science and postgraduate qualifications in Education—were matched by her remarkable ability to communicate, mentor, and encourage others. Friends and colleagues remember her as a compassionate listener, generous mentor, and someone who made everyone feel welcomed, valued, and capable of making a difference.
Outside her professional life, Lauren cherished time with her family, enjoyed exploring the outdoors, loved gardening, and believed deeply in fostering kindness, empathy, and positive communication. Her quiet strength and genuine care for others earned her the admiration of everyone fortunate enough to know her.
Although Lauren’s passing is deeply felt throughout the Margaret River region, her legacy will continue through the landscapes she helped restore, the native seeds she collected that will grow into future revegetation projects, and the countless children, volunteers, and community members she inspired to protect the natural world.
