Coquitlam Fire Today: One Person Dead After Residential Structure Fire on Roderick Avenue, Investigation Underway

COQUITLAM, British Columbia — A residential structure fire in Coquitlam has resulted in the death of one person, prompting an ongoing investigation by local authorities. Emergency crews responded to the incident Tuesday morning, July 7, as firefighters worked to contain the blaze and search the residence.

According to the Coquitlam RCMP, officers were called shortly after 9:00 a.m. to the 700 block of Roderick Avenue to assist Coquitlam Fire/Rescue Services with traffic control and scene security during a residential structure fire.

Information provided by a witness indicated that one resident was unaccounted for following the fire. During firefighting operations, crews located a deceased individual inside the home.

Authorities have not yet released the identity of the person who died, as officials continue working to notify family members and complete the necessary investigative procedures. The circumstances surrounding the death remain under review.

An 18-year-old individual was treated at the scene following the incident. In addition, a Coquitlam RCMP officer was transported to a nearby hospital for smoke inhalation after assisting with the emergency response.

“Our thoughts are with the family, friends, and all those impacted by this tragic incident,” said Sergeant Adriana O’Malley, Coquitlam RCMP Media Relations Officer.

Following the discovery, Coquitlam RCMP assumed responsibility for the investigation and is working alongside Coquitlam Fire/Rescue Services and the BC Coroners Service to determine what happened.

The cause of the fire has not been determined at this time. Investigators are examining the scene, gathering evidence, and reviewing information that may help explain how the fire started and the events that followed.
